Featuring dRPC ECD projects
The dRPC was awarded a planning grant by the Bernard Van Leer Foundation in November 2003 to build the capacity of CBOs to design and implement early childhood development projects through community partnerships in the Northern Nigeria. The community partnership approach to ECD is based on a dual strategy of supporting CBOs to run ECD Centers with Community participation together with support to CBOs to advocate to the local government for increased expenditure on ECD and primary education.

A total of 20 CBOs were identified in 2004 and 8 had their capacity built to carry out ECD programs. In May 2005, two CBOs, one in a rural area in Rogo LGA (Rafin Tsara Fadama Development Association) and the second in an urban area in Nassarawa LGA, (Youth and Environmental Development Association) were supported to develop and run ECD Centers. Each ECD centre has an intake of 70 children, both males and females, between the ages of 4-9 who are neither attending Nursery nor Primary schools.

The dRPC supported ECD Center project:

    • Children in the ECD Centers are fed daily
    • Health needs are provided by a CHEW who is permanently on the site
    • Mothers are given a micro credit grant of N100, 000.00 per site to carry out micro-enterprises.
    • Children are taught using the Child-to-Child method

Children are fed everyday at the Badawa ECD Centre run by the Youth and Environmental Development Association (YEDA) under the dRPC’s ECD Project
